IMMANUEL VOICE
Program for the quarter April-May-June 2013

Welcome to the Immanuel Mar Thoma Church, Nerul

The Industrial Revolution has contributed to the migration of people from various parts of the Country to the newly formed Industrial townships. This is true in the case of the members of the Mar Thoma church also. The success of the Mar Thoma Christians who were enlightened by the Great Reformation and who adopted deep relationship with and faith in Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, as their lifestyle, migrated from their native places to various parts of the world in search of greener pastures for job and education. This migration was instrumental in the formation of Mar Thoma community in Mumbai.

During the period of 1930-1940, many of the Mar Thoma Christians came to Mumbai and started prayer groups and worships. The first Holy Communion service was conducted on Sunday 17th November 1940 at St Marys CNI Church, Parel under the leadership of Rev. P. J. Thomas from Ankola Ashram. From November 1942 onwards the service was conducted at the Holy Redeemer CNI Church, Dadar. Worship services were also started at Chembur in 1961. In July 1968, the Chembur Parish was formed.

The members residing in Navi Mumbai areas assembled together and started worship group in Vashi under the guidance of the Chembur Parish. The Navi Mumbai prayer groups became an independent Parish from January 1st 1989 and were christened as St. Pauls Mar Thoma Church Navi Mumbai. The spiritual needs of the Members residing from Airoli to Panvel were catered by this Parish. In the Lords year 1996 Holy Communion service commenced in Nerul under the leadership of Rev. Varghese Thomas at the Jacobite Syrian Church, Sector. 3, Nerul, once a month. In the year 2000 we have shifted our worship place to St Augustine School and thereafter from 2004 onwards regular services were held on all Sundays at Keraleya Samaj, Nerul.

An independent Parish in Nerul was a long cherished dream of the members, who reside in and around Nerul. The prayer group of Nerul area of St. Pauls Mar Thoma Church, Vashi had submitted an application to our then Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa for the establishment of a new Parish in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The request for an independent parish was considered by the Managing committee and subsequently by the General Body of the St. Pauls MTC, Vashi. The members had given their consent by signing a separate memorandum that was submitted to the Diocesan Office. Total 82 families (appx.300 members) belonging to Nerul 1A, Nerul 1B, Nerul Phase 2 & 3 and Seawoods area (4 Prayer groups) had signed the request Form. The Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa forwarded our request to the Hon. Episcopal Synod and the Hon. Episcopal Synod granted permission for a separate Parish.

As per the circular sent by His Grace Most Rev. Philipose Mar Chrisostom Mar Thoma Metropolitan the Prayer groups viz. Nerul 1A, Nerul 1B, Nerul 2&3 and Seawoods was upgraded as a Parish and christened as Immanuel Mar Thoma Church, Nerul from 1st May 2007. On 3rd June 2007 Our Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev Joseph Mar Barnabas inaugurated this Parish and appointed Rev Jameson K as the Vicar of the Parish. The parish is grateful to Rev. K. Jameson, our first vicar, for his dynamic and able leadership.

We place on record our sincere thanks to all Achens who were in charge of the Navi Mumbai prayer groups i.e. Rev Joseph Jacob (Now Rt Rev Joseph Mar Barnabas Thirumeni) Rev.
